Officially taking the title or role of Birthmother means that you have given birth to a child, and then eventually, at some point, willingly or not, signed the legal documents that would officially lead you to relinquish your parental rights to your child. Another couple will take responsibility for your child. Sometimes you know who they are, if you are in an open or semi-open adoption. Sometimes the adoption will be closed.
